ABC Fire Extinguishers are very versatile. They are often the ideal choice as the ABC fire extinguisher are able to put out many different types of fires.

What do the ABC ratings mean on Fire Extinguisher?

“A” TRASH-WOOD-PAPER – Fire extinguisher with a Class A rating are effective against fires involving paper, wood, textiles, and plastics.

“B” LIQUIDS – Fire extinguisher with a Class B rating are effective against flammable liquid fires. These can be fires where cooking liquids, oil, gasoline, kerosene, or paint have become ignited.

“C” ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT – Fire extinguisher with a Class C rating are suitable for fires in “live” electrical equipment.

CO2 Fire Extinguisher

CO2 Extinguishers, also known as carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, are primarily used for electrical fires and often paired with foam extinguishers. CO2 extinguishers are normally used for electrical fire risks and are usually the main fire extinguisher type provided in computer server rooms.

CO2 Fire Extinguishers should be standard issue for premises with live electrical fire risk, such as : OFFICES, SHOPS, SCHOOLS and HOSPITALS

What is fire extinguisher?

A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations. It is not intended for use on an out-of-control fire, such as one which has reached the ceiling, endangers the user or otherwise requires the expertise of a fire fighter.

Choosing the right fire extinguisher.

It is very essential that the right type of extinguisher is used for the fire. Choosing the wrong type of extinguisher can have life-threatening consequences. Fire extinguishers come in a wide variety of types – each one designed to put out a different kind of fire.

Class A – Ordinary solid combustibles like wood, cloth, and paper products.

Class B – Flammable liquids and gases. (Paint and petrol)

Class C – Flammable Gases (Butane and methane)

Class D – Flammable metals. (Lithium and potassium)

Class Electrical – Electrical equipment (Computers and generators)

ABC Fire Extinguishers use mono-ammonium phosphate which is a dry chemical that is able to quickly put out all three classes of fire, Class A, Class B and Class C, meaning they’re suitable for putting out wood and paper fires, flammable liquid fires, and electrical fires. ABC extinguishers use the dry chemical mono-ammonium phosphate as the extinguishing agent. The fire extingiuisher label colour is blue. The fire extinguisher is use for organic materials such as paper and cardboard, fabrics and textiles, wood and coal. Plus, flammable liquids, like paint and petrol, flammable gases, like liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and acetylene and fires involving electrical equipment up to 1000v. This type of fire extinguisher cannot use for fires involving cooking oil, fires involving electrical equipment over 1000v or in enclosed spaces, such as offices or residential properties. Dry powder fire extinguisher smothers fires by forming a barrier between the fuel and the source of oxygen. The dry powder fire extinguisher should be placed near to the source of the fire risk.

CO2 fire extinguishers put out Class B fires (flammable liquids, such as paint and petroleum). The fire extingiuisher label colour is black. The fire extinguisher is use for flammable liquids, like paint and petro as well as electrical fires. This type of fire extinguisher cannot use for cooking fires involving oil and grease – especially chip-pan fires (class F fires), combustible materials like paper, wood or textiles and flammable metals. CO2 fire extinguisher suffocates fires by displacing the oxygen the fire needs to burn. All work vehicles should also carry a smaller 2kg CO2 fire extinguisher. The CO2 fire extinguisher should be placed near to the source of the fire risk and/or near the fire exits. CO2 fire extinguishers contain pure carbon dioxide which is a clean extinguish-ant, leaving no residue. CO2 fire extinguisher is suitable for Class B flammable liquid fires (petrol, oil, solvents), and recommended for use on live electrical equipment.

How to use fire extinguisher?

A simple fire extinguisher training technique to use with families and employees is the PASS method :

  •  Pull the pin on the extinguisher.
  •  Aim the hose nozzle low toward the base of the fire.
  •  Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
  •  Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the flames until extinguished.
